Jaime Payes: Prompt # Uno

Initially before I made my big move from Houston, Texas to Los Angeles I was somewhat involved with the art scene there, I was a member of Houston Center for Photography and I also participated in the Houston Art Car parade several times which takes place every year. In all the time I've been living here I have gone to a few museum and gallery openings I can see that the art scene in Los Angeles is more established and diverse compared to the art scene in Houston.

Since moving here I haven't had free time to really check out anything local but I have attended a few museums and gallery openings to make up for not being as involved as i want to be in the local scene here. I think me living here has set me back because I really don't know anyone involved in the art scene that can let me know about other art events.

In high school I showcased some of my work in the Houston Museum of Fine Arts for an award ceremony, my districts annual senior art show, and I always show off my work on the web to people who are interested by it. Lately I have been working on my presence I have started several art blogs where my work can be seen .

I've never interned or worked for a design studio but I have applied to many. It would be sweet if I had an internship by now but I just think my inexperience in the industry is setting me back. I really think that's the reason I haven't got any offers from the places I applied to. I don't think anyone would want to hire someone who doesn't know what there doing. I'm just hoping I get a call soon so I can get a glimpsed of the real world.

  1. I am curious to what kind of internship you are looking for, and what you are looking to do with your degree and life after Otis. I think that once you find your scene and place in the L.A. art scene your life will sort out and you will be able to get what you are looking for. My main question is what is the biggest difference between the art world in Houston and the art world of L.A. you have experienced. Which do you feel is a more thriving scene and which scene would you rather be apart of? And why?

  2. Having been to Houston a few times, I have noticed that the art scene there is more conservative compared to the art scene in Los Angeles. Los Angeles seems to be the perfect place for an artist to have more freedom in their artwork. Do you have a webpage set up or can I have the webpage url that displays your work? Since you're from Houston, do you feel as though Houston's art style has somewhat shaped the style of your own artwork? As for the internships, I would say to keep looking and keep applying because they'll help you expand your knowledge in the industry you want to pursue.

  3. I am curious as to what you like to take photographs of. I would also like to see some of your work if you don't mind. A good way of getting to know whats "in" right now in the LA art scene is to attend the Art Walk. The Art Walk just gives you a little fast of every art style. You can go fro abstract to life drawing all in one block. I hope you get the internship you are looking for.

  4. Jaime, I'd like to echo the other comments by saying that your post makes me curious about your work. You have a great opportunity to link to your website and/or blog from this post. In addition, I recommend incorporating an image (or two) of your work into the post itself, giving curious readers some instant gratification. If they like what they see here, they're more likely to take the time to visit your other web sites.

I can totally relate to your point about feeling set back by relocating. The L.A. art scene (and the Houston one, for that matter) can be intimidating when you're new in town. I hope your participation in P.S.T. and this class help to give you a greater sense of connection here.

  5. Actually I really want to see your photographs. What kind of photograph do you do? Do you have any website I can look up? I'm really interested about it:)
You said there is no one would hire someone who doesn't know what he is doing. What are you really think you don't know what kind art you are doing? I don't think so. I think just because you are 'fresh' for here. Maybe the people there didn't really understand your work yet. Don't be disappointed about it. All the boss want their people have enough experience. But they don't know the experience is form the chance to let them work with you first.
Have you ever been to the Venice beach before? There are lots 'weird' artist showing their art. They are not afraid being judged by anybody. They are having fun show people how different they are. They enjoyed to see when the people looked at their work and goes 'wow'. Because they are new, they are different.
Never get scared by being new or inexperienced!
